Main lines of research
Cardiovascular risk factors (nutrition, diabetes, obesi- ty, high blood pressure, lipid levels, smoking, etc) affect cardiovascular disease incidence through several phy- sio-pathological pathways.
Our group investigates some of these pathways in the- se research lines:
• The role of diet on intermediate markers of cardio- vascular risk:
- Evaluation of the effect of a Mediterranean diet on the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (Predimed Study).
- Phytate intake, coronary calcification and risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Change in cardiovascular risk score and metabolic 48 I Annual report 2015 I CIBEROBN
syndrome after an intervention based on the Medi- terranean diet.
• Phatological implications of obesity:
- Evaluation of an intensive lifestyle intervention based on a low calorie Mediterranean diet, physical activity and conductual treatment on weight loss and cardiovascular disease prevention (Predime- dPlus study).
- Molecular basis of sexual dimorphism on the ener- gy metabolism and mitocondrial function; patholo- gical implications.
- Nutritional and genetic determinants of the deve- lopment of different obesity phenotypes; associa- tion of these phenotypes with diseases risk and mortality.
